Petrojet: Refining & Petrochemicals — Legal, Contractual & Technical Translation

A subcontract, technical specifications, and purchase lists for the Assiut Hydrocracking Complex, between Petrojet and an engineering partner within an international supply chain. The risk lay in the definitions and the language of obligation: the difference between an obligation of result and one of best effort is read in the translated text, not the parties’ intent. We locked down the definitions and cross-references throughout, distinguished mandatory from optional language, and described stamps and signatures in text at their positions.

Client (Petrojet)

Petrojet operates in petroleum projects and technical consultations, working within international supply chains that connect it to foreign engineering partners on major refining and petrochemical projects. When a local contractor signs a subcontract with an international engineering partner, the risk isn’t just understanding the contract’s clauses — it’s whether the translated Arabic text carries the exact same binding force as the original English text, with no slippage in meaning. This isn’t an internal document that a rough understanding will do for; it’s a document that may be presented to a third party as the basis for a claim.

The company commissioned Fast Trans to translate a complete subcontract package for the Assiut Hydrocracking Complex project, comprising a 23-page agreement template alongside technical specifications and purchase lists. The package is signed between Petrojet and an engineering partner within an international supply chain, and every page in it carries legal and technical obligations that had to carry over into Arabic with the same precision. The package wasn’t a single uniform text — it was three elements of different natures, a legal agreement, engineering technical specifications, and purchase lists, all needing to come out to one single standard of accuracy despite each element’s different nature.

The Challenge

01  A subcontract between two parties in a large refining project

The risk lay in the language of obligation, the definitions, and the cross-references.

02  Contracts of this kind are built on a network of recurring definitions and internal cross-references between their clauses

any ambiguity in carrying a single definition into Arabic ripples into how every clause referencing it is understood. More critically: the precise distinction between mandatory and optional language — a single word translated with weaker force than the original could turn a strict legal obligation into a mere option, and the reverse is equally true: stronger phrasing than the original could saddle a party with an obligation it never agreed to.

03  Since the package was already signed and carried approved stamps and signatures

any interference with the document’s form or removal of these elements would have stripped it of its value as a reliable legal reference. And combining three types of content — legal, technical, and procurement — in one package meant the translator couldn’t rely on a single area of expertise; legal precision alone isn’t enough in the specifications section, and technical precision alone isn’t enough in the agreement section.

What We Did

01

Locking down the contractual definitions and their cross-references throughout the entire document, so every definition carries the same meaning everywhere it appears and everywhere it’s referenced.

02

Precisely distinguishing mandatory from optional language in every clause, preserving the same legal force the original text carried.

03

Describing the stamps and signatures in text at their correct positions in the document, preserving its value as a signed and approved instrument.

The Result, in Numbers

A Unified Arabic Version That Preserves Definitions and Binding Language With No Slippage in Meaning

We delivered a complete Arabic version of the contract package that preserves the definitions, cross-references, and language of obligation exactly as they appeared in the original with no slippage in meaning, and describes the stamps and signatures in text at their positions. The Arabic version of the agreement, technical specifications, and purchase lists came out terminologically consistent with one another, and valid as both a legal and technical reference at once.

What This Means for You

When an international engineering partner contracts a local contractor, the Arabic version of the contract isn’t just a translation for understanding — it’s a document that may later be relied upon. Any word that weakens a binding clause or blurs a definition can be exploited in any future dispute between the parties. The difference between precise legal drafting and an approximate one may not show on signing day, but it shows clearly on the day of a dispute.

This is what sets Fast Trans apart in this kind of project: working inside international supply chains themselves, not on their margins. The ability to handle an already-signed subcontract, with its interlocking definitions and internal cross-references, requires a legal understanding of the contractual structure, not just fluency in both languages. This is what separates a translation office that handles an isolated text from one that understands how a single contract’s clauses interlock.

The same lesson applies to any foreign company entering the local market through a subcontract or engineering partnership: the Arabic version of the contract must be built to a strict legal standard from the first page, because it’s the document that will be relied upon if a dispute arises, not a side explanatory translation. Trust between the two parties to an international subcontract begins with each party’s confidence that the translated version says exactly what the original says — no more, no less.
